Brussels 8 October 2019

On 8 October 2019, libraries from all over Europe are meeting with the Members of the European Parliament (MEPs), as part of the actions for the “Code Week”, at the premises of the European Parliament.

The Public Libraries 2030 (PL2030) organization is hosting “Generation Code: Born at the Library”, which is an interactive exhibition showcasing the top innovative digital exhibits from public libraries across the E.U. The exhibition takes place at the European Parliament at the beginning of October every year.

The organization has also created the MEP Library Lovers Group which forms a bridge between the libraries and the Members of the European Parliament. That group brings together Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) from around the E.U. and and across the political spectrum, who share their passion about libraries. Across Europe, 65.000 public libraries form an accessible and safe place for their members, children as well as adults. Over 2.3 million E.U. citizens attend a digital literacy course in their library and are learning basic digital skills.

On Tuesday 8 October, the Central Public Library of Veria, will be the one and only Greek Library which will be represented at the Brussels European Parliament among 76 participants from 25 countries, at “Generation Code: Born at the Library” event. A small sample of the numerous, innovative technology activities that the Library of Veria is running will be displayed. (Robotics, 3D printing, Virtual Reality, Electric Circuits).

Moreover, from 5 to 20 October 2019, workshops and coding courses for children and adults are taking place.

Let’s celebrate then, the amazing work that public libraries do every day in filling the digital gap of our communities. Let’s feel proud once again of the Central Public Library of Veria and its appeal on a national and international level.

Inventor for 4 days – educational activities for children of 12 to 15 years old

The Central Public Library of Veria, within the frame of the Veria Tech Lab’s activities, organizes an educational activity for children of 12 to 15 years old with the title “Inventor for 4 days”. Motors, temperature sensors, RGB leds, potentiometers, piezoelectric elements, digital compasses, micro-computers and radio-communications. We become inventors for 4 days by creating various physical computing creative applications. We learn how to program the micro-computers, we experiment and try our craziest ideas. From interactive games and micro-robots to applications of augmented reality and navigation aid for blind people, the limit to inventions is our imagination. Will you make it to create and program the most interesting invention?

The educational activity “Inventor for 4 days” was designed and implemented by the company Robotixlab (www.robotixlab.com) and the mechanical engineer A.Kanouras with the support of the American Embassy.

Celebrating Women’s day at the Central Public Library of Veria

The Library invites you to celebrate the International Women’s day from 10.00’ until 13.00’ by offering free beauty services to all women. Relaxing face massage and haircuts – which will provide the opportunity to donate hair- will transform the ground floor of the Library into a beauty salon for a humanitarian purpose. All the services will be provided by the students of the 1^st Vocational High School of Veria, supported by the Laboratory Center of Veria.

The life-long learning center ‘Easy Education’ supports Veria Central Public Library

The Central Public Library of Veria would like to thank the Life-long learning center ‘Easy Education’ for its sponsorship for 2019, supporting the work of the Library in various aspects, mostly by covering functional financial needs.

The Central Public Library of Veria is a public corporation, funded and supervised by the Ministry of Education. It has more than 36.000 members and holds a rich collection of more than 150.000 items. The funding which came from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation helped the Library upgrade its services to the public and allowed to create new ones, such as the recording studio, the multipurpose room, and the local history department. Besides all that, the library has always relied on the generous sponsorships of individuals, private and public companies as well as various institutes and organizations.

The life-long learning center ‘Easy Education’ since its opening, in 2008, has provided more than 50 educational programs and training services to more than 8000 people of Imathia prefecture and to 4000 more from all over Greece through e-learning methods. This year it celebrates 10 years of successful course in the area of education.

INTERNATIONAL COFFEE DAY

The 1st October is the International Coffee Day and the Central Public Library of Veria invites you all to a music party with free filter coffee, a kind offer from Coffee Island.

Coffee Island supports the Library’s work by funding the subscription to Press Reader, the world’s largest online kiosk the the Library offers to its readers.

The party will take place on the 2nd floor of the Library, Monday, October 1st, from 19.00 to 21.00, while on the decks a professional dj will be playing music.

Enjoying coffee means good company, good music and beautiful space!

Robert Dawson Photography

It is with great joy to announce that the distinguished photographer, author and professor Robert Dawson will pay a visit to our library on Monday, the 17^th September 2018. As part of his travels to Italy, Greece and Israel, he will also visit and photograph the Central Public Library of Veria.

Dr. Dawson is a professor at the University of Stanford in the USA (Art and History of Art Department). He has published many books and participates in many photography exhibitions. He has 25 years of experience in photographing libraries in Europe and America.

The afternoon of the same day, at 6 pm, at the Library’s Veria Tech Lab, Dr.  Dawson will meet the lovers of photography and chat with them. The presentation will be held in English and it will be free of charge.
