Regarding the function of the Public Library Department of Veria

The Department of the Public Central Library of Veria has been housed from 1991 in the school complex of 7^th -11^th Primary School. It is a fully organized and automated library which until 2015 functioned on a full-time basis, with a posted teacher of the Primary Education, in accordance with the initial decision on its foundation.

In the school year 2015-16 the postings of primary school teachers were not approved by the Ministry of Education, in spite of the efforts of the Public Library. As a result the Library functioned for a few hours, 2 times a week.

The Public Central library of  Veria, is at the disposal of  the Primary Education Administration and the school Administration for a solution to be found to the best and most efficient exploitation of the place.

We are both delighted and honored, and filled with deepest gratitude, to announce the successful ending of our campaign, as on Monday the 29th the short period of extension was completed.

The contribution of the people even until the last day was overwhelming. All together we managed to gather 110.640,6 €, that is over the 110% of the target, surpassing all expectations and mainly transmitting an all-important and hopeful for our times message that: “The strength of the many makes it!’’

During this period, from the 11th of March, the rhythm of the people’s interest was the one which defined, coordinated and supervised the rhythm of the renovation. Depictions and designs were taking shape and our vision day by day, was becoming reality.

The 2nd floor of the Library, which could not be completed without your support, is now ready to open its gates to all of you who shaped it. On Friday the 15th of April all together we turn on the lights, with a two -days celebration dedicated in learning, knowledge and creativity, which will be very shortly announced.

The Central Public Library of Veria, informs the refugees hosted in the area, for its services which they can use during their stay in the Prefecture of Imathia.

The Library offers access to wide sources of information, organizes creative workshops and seminars for children and adults always aiming at providing the best possible services to everyone.

Starting from Monday the 28^th of March and on a regular basis, our Mobile Library, after the decision of the Administrative Council of the Library, will be visiting  the temporary center of refugees  in  “Armatolos Kokkinos” camp.

The Central Library housed in 8 Ellis Street, in the center of the city, can offer :

• Free Internet access through its 17 computers it possesses
• Fast wifi
• Access to the largest newsstand of the world, the pressreader in which newspaper and magazines from 100 different countries, in approximately 60 languages are included
• Books in the English language
• Illustrated children’s books and other books in the English language
• Board games in the English language and games without words
• Educational dvd
• Space to charge mobile devices and portable computers
• Specific space for skype communication

Access in the above is free.

For the issue of temporary member card, it is necessary to present the passport or other document.

Our campaign at Indiegogo

Dear friends, relatives, fellow countrymen,

On 11 January, we launched a campaign to support the Central Public Library of Veria, our library, which makes us proud all over the world for years, through the platform support.libver.gr

Our goal is to raise 100.000€, an amount that will allow us to complete the renovation of the second floor, so that our library can become one of the most modern libraries in Europe.

When we started, we considered that the goal was ambitious but – and while three weeks still remain for its completion – the donations we have collected, have already surpassed 53% and allow us to be optimistic that we will succeed!

The incoming messages made us understand that you are again by our side. You also have taken action so that the people learn about our effort, you have sent us your contribution, you share our love and pride for the Library.

TO TURN ON THE LIGHTS TOGETHER

The Central Public Library of Veria , known as the “Greek miracle”, has grown from its origins as a small library in a mountainous region of northern Greece into one of the most modern libraries of the world! It has managed to become the core of the local community, with 31.375 registered members (60% of the population of Veria), 800 daily visitors of every age and especially students (in 2014, 5.200 students visited the library). From November 1999 until November 2015 the borrowed items (books, magazines, and board games) numbered 2.943.633!

In 2010 was the recipient of the ‘’Access to Learning Award’’ by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation receiving worldwide recognition out of 350 nominations. With the prize money which accompanied the award we installed photovoltaic systems to save energy, we created the Media Lab on the 1st floor which is flooded with people and we upgraded our technological equipment. The whole project will be completed with the renovation of the 2nd floor.

A state-of-the-art multiple function space will be created ,which will provide the public and the artists-authors the ideal environment of high standards and aesthetics in order to attend and present a variety of cultural activities: performances, lectures, film screenings, and even cooking courses! However, the additional amount of 100,000€ for the purchase of necessary equipment is required.

For this reason, the Central Public Library devoted once again to innovative and pioneering proposals, follows the financing methods which large cultural and educational organizations use worldwide and announces the launch of the support campaign to raise the necessary funds from the public and its supporters in the country and around the world.

RENOVATION OF THE 2nd FLOOR OF THE CENTRAL PUBLIC LIBRARY OF VERIA

The renovation   of the 2^nd floor of the CPL of Veria started on Monday 2^nd November .With this project , the utilization of the ‘’Access to Learning Award’’ which the library received (among 350 libraries worldwide) in 2010 by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation is completed.

The 2^nd floor is being renovated ,modernized and transformed into a multifunctional venue of events with a specially designed reception area for young and older people , which will host ,among others, theatrical productions , film projections, concerts ,photo galleries, speeches ,projects , workshops for children and adults.

The staff offices will remain on the same floor, emphasizing on a better communication between the employees, the development of a creative working environment and of course the best public service. On the same floor a special place will be formed   for the operation of the Future Library, the non – profit organization which is a strategical associate of the Central Public Library of Veria, and its goal is the creation of a network of libraries ,so as to reinforce their role as center of learning ,creativity and interaction.

The completion of the renovation of the library’s building along with the upgrade of its technological infrastructure was possible with the donation of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation . A donation which contributes to the improvement of the services which the Public Library of Veria offers to the citizens of the city and the wider Imathia region.

The 2^nd floor function requires additionally the purchase of extra technological equipment and furniture. The library will proceed to a specific campaign for informing and collecting this amount through sponsorship but also by addressing to its members.
