Η μάχη της Κρήτης 1941

Από τις 20 έως τις 29 Μαΐου 1941 γίνεται η μάχη της Κρήτης που καταλήγει στην κατάληψη του νησιού από τα χιτλερικά στρατεύματα. Κι όμως, αυτή η νίκη μέτρησε για ήττα. Με 10-17 χιλιάδες νεκρούς και κατεστραμμένο το σώμα των αλεξιπτωτιστών, ο “ανίκητος” στρατός του Γ’ Ράϊχ αντιλαμβάνεται για πρώτη φορά πόσο τρωτός είναι, και μαζί το αντιλαμβάνεται και όλος ο πλανήτης που μέχρι τότε έβλεπε τις σιδερόφραχτες ναζιστικές στρατιές να καταπίνουν σε μέρες χώρες ολόκληρες.

Αστάθμητος παράγοντας που χάλασε τα σχέδια των ναζί σε αυτή τη μάχη, ο “άμαχος” πληθυσμός της νήσου. Να πώς περιγράφει ένας Γερμανός αξιωματικός των αλεξιπτωτιστών ένα περιστατικό στην περιοχή Γαλατά Χανίων, όπου πραγματοποιήθηκε και η κυρία προσπάθεια των Γερμανών:

«Στὸ λιγοστὸ φῶς τῆς ἡμέρας θυμᾶμαι ποὺ πετάχθηκε σὰν ἀγρίμι μέσα ἀπὸ τοὺς ἀγκαθωτοὺς θάμνους, σὰν ἀστραπή, μιὰ λεβεντόκορμη σιλουέτα, στὰ μαύρα ντυμένη, μὲ ψηλὲς μπότες καὶ σαρίκι στὸ κεφάλι, ποὺ δίχως καθυστέρηση φύτεψε μὲ τὸ γερμανικὸ αὐτόματο, ποὺ κρατοῦσε, πέντε σφαῖρες στὸ στομάχι δύο ἀλεξιπτωτιστῶν. Πρὶν προλάβουμε νὰ ἀντιδράσουμε, ἔπεσε κάτω, γλιστρώντας σὰν φίδι μέσα στοὺς θάμνους μὲ δαιμονισμένη ταχύτητα. Ἀντιδρῶντας γρήγορα, τὸν κυκλώσαμε καὶ προσπαθήσαμε νὰ τὸν ἐξουδετερώσουμε. Ὅταν ἔφθασα κοντά του δὲν εἶχε ἀκόμα πεθάνει. Τὰ μάτια του ἀνοικτά, κατάμαυρα, λὲς καὶ φοβέριζε τὸν ἐρχομὸ τοῦ θανάτου, ὅμως ὅλο σχεδὸν τὸ κορμί του ἦταν χτυπημένο ἀπὸ τὰ θραύσματα τῆς χειροβομβίδας. Τὸν σήκωσα καὶ ἀκούμπησα τὴν πλάτη του στὸν κορμὸ μιᾶς χοντρῆς ἐλιᾶς. Εἰλικρινὰ μὲ εἶχε συναρπάσει ἡ τακτικὴ ποὺ μαχόταν. Θὰ ἦταν περίπου 18 χρονῶν. Πρὶν ξεψυχήσει, κοίταξε βαθιὰ μέσα στὰ μάτια τὸ στοχασμό μου καὶ χαμογέλασε. Ξαφνιάστηκα. Δὲν ξέρω ἄν χαμογελοῦσε σὲ μένα ἤ στὸν θάνατο, ποὺ φτερούγιζε γιὰ νὰ τὸν πάρει. Σήκωσε μὲ κόπο τὸ δεξί του χέρι, πῆρε ἀπὸ τὸ λαιμό του ἕνα σταυρό ποὺ κρεμόταν, τὸν φίλησε κι ἔγειρε τὸ κεφάλι πλάγια, ξεψυχώντας μὲ καρφωμένο στὰ χείλη του τὸ χαμόγελο.Ὅμως, ἡ ἔκπληξή μου ἔμελλε νὰ κορυφωθεῖ, ὅταν τραβῶντας τὸ σαρίκι του γιὰ νὰ τὸν ξαπλώσω χάμω, ξεχύθηκαν ἀπ’ τὸ κεφάλι του μισὸ μέτρο κατάμαυρα μαλλιά. Τότε μόνο κατάλαβα πὼς ἦταν γυναῖκα. Βουβάθηκα. Ἦταν κάτι ποὺ δὲν τὸ περίμενα. Ἔνοιωσα στὸ λαιμό μου ἕναν κόμπο νὰ μὲ πνίγει. Ἦταν ἡ πρώτη φορὰ ποὺ συνειδητοποίησα ὅτι ἡ μοίρα τῶν ἀλεξιπτωτιστῶν θὰ ‘ ταν πολὺ δύσκολη στὴν Κρήτη. Ἔφυγα, ἀφήνοντας τὴ σκέψη μου κάτω ἀπὸ τὴ γέρικη ἐλιά, κοντὰ στὴ νεκρὴ κοπέλα».

Παγκανίνι – ένας πρωτοπόρος

Επέτειος θανάτου του Νικολό Παγκανίνι η 27η Μαϊου, όπως μας πληροφορεί το ενδιαφέρον www.sansimera.gr, απ’ όπου αντλούμε και λίγα στοιχεία για τη ζωή του:

… Τα ρεσιτάλ του στα μεγάλα μουσικά κέντρα της Ευρώπης θύμιζαν πολύ συναυλίες των  Beatles. Όπως έγραφε στον Γκαίτε ένας φίλος του, «με τις άτιμες τις συναυλίες  του ο Παγκανίνι τρέλαινε άνδρες και γυναίκες». Ο ίδιος ο Γκαίτε τον παρομοίαζε  ως «στήλη από φλόγες και σύννεφα». Είχε μοναδική σκηνική παρουσία για τα  δεδομένα της κλασσικής μουσικής. Συνήθιζε να χρησιμοποιεί τεχνάσματα, όπως το να  σπάζει τάχα κατά λάθος τις χορδές του βιολιού του και να συνεχίζει με τη μία την  εκτέλεση του έργου, για να κερδίσει τον θαυμασμό και το χειροκρότημα του κόσμου.

Press Release: “The treasure chest of e-stories opens

in Serres, Veria, Alexandria and Polykastro!”

“Everybody has got a story to tell, we just need to try to find them”.

With the above phrase in mind four libraries in Greece found the way to capture these stories and  put them in a treasure chest that can be opened by anyone wherever he/she is. It is about stories of our land: personal stories, historical events, legends, fairy tales, social events, customs and folklore, i.e. whatever you feel that has to be preserved. For the first time four libraries in Greece form a small network in order to record a yet unwritten history of cultural heritage.

People come and go. Some leave behind a book of life, experience and imagination but some others don’t. These libraries give us the chance to preserve in time stories of our own and of our beloved ones.

25 Μαΐου 2013 – Κινητοποιήσεις σε 30 χώρες ενάντια στα μεταλλαγμένα

Κινητοποιήση και στην Αθήνα

Με 17.500 υπαλλήλους, με πωλήσεις που το 2009 έφτασαν τα 11,7 δισ. δολάρια και με παρουσία σε 46 έξι χώρες η Μονσάντο είναι ηγετική δύναμη παγκοσμίως στους γενετικά τροποποιημένους οργανισμούς (ΓΤΟ), αλλά και μία από τις πλέον αμφιλεγόμενες εταιρείες στην ιστορία της βιομηχανίας. Από το 1901, έτος της ίδρυσής της, η εταιρεία οδηγήθηκε επανειλημμένα στη δικαιοσύνη κατηγορούμενη για την τοξικότητα των προϊόντων της, στα οποία περιλαμβάνονται το PCB (πυραλένιο), πολλά καταστρεπτικά ζιζανιοκτόνα (όπως το αποφυλλωτικό agent orange, με τα οποία ο αμερικανικός στρατός ψέκαζε τα δάση κατά τον Πόλεμο του Βιετνάμ), ή η αυξητική ορμόνη των βοοειδών (απαγορευμένη πλέον στην Ευρώπη), επικίνδυνη για τα ζώα και τους ανθρώπους. Σήμερα ωστόσο η Monsanto εμφανίζεται ως μια επιχείρηση των «επιστημών της ζωής», αφοσιωμένη στα πλεονεκτήματα της βιώσιμης ανάπτυξης. Με τους διαγονιδιακούς σπόρους που έχει αναπτύξει, ισχυρίζεται ότι θέλει να λύσει το πρόβλημα της πείνας στον κόσμο και να μειώσει την επιβάρυνση στο περιβάλλον, για το καλό της ανθρωπότητας. Τι ακριβώς συμβαίνει; Ποιοι είναι οι στόχοι αυτής της εταιρείας που, ενώ τόσα χρόνια αδιαφορούσε για τις συνέπειες των δραστηριοτήτων της στο περιβάλλον και στους ανθρώπους, ξαφνικά θέλει να εμφανίζεται σαν ανθρωπιστική οργάνωση;

Fab Labs: A Conversation with Neil Gershenfeld

MIT’s Neil Gershenfeld is redefining the boundaries between the digital and analog worlds.  “The digital revolution is over”, Gershenfeld says.  We won.  So what comes next?  His Center for Bits and Atoms has developed quite a few answers, including Internet 0, a tiny web server that fits into lightbulbs and doorknobs, networking the physical world in previously unimaginable ways.

But Gershenfeld is best known as a pioneer in personal fabrication—small-scale manufacturing enabled by digital technologies, which gives people the tools to build literally anything they can imagine.  His famous Fab Lab is immensely popular among students at MIT, who crowd Gershenfeld’s classes.  The concept is potentially life-altering in the developing world, where a Fab Lab with just $20,000 worth of laser cutters, milling machines, and soldering irons can transform a community, helping people harness their creativity to build tools, replacement parts, and essential products unavailable in the local market.  Join us on Friday, May 24^th for a 30-minute webchat, and hear about the digital fabrication revolution with Neil Gershenfeld!

Bio:  Neil Gershenfeld is a professor at MIT and the head of MIT’s Center for Bits and Atoms, a sister lab spun out of the popular MIT Media Lab.  His research interests are mainly in interdisciplinary studies involving physics and computer science, in such fields as quantum computing, nanotechnology, personal fabrication, and other research areas.  His books include, “When Things Start to Think”, “The Nature of Mathematical Modeling”, “The Physics of Information Technology”, and “Fab, The Coming Revolution on Your Desktop –  From Personal Computers to Personal Fabrication.”  In 2004, Gershenfeld was named to the Scientific American 50.  The magazine has also named him Communications Research Leader of the Year.

Paper submission – Publications

Interested authors can submit to EasyChair. The following types of presentation are invited:

•  full papers (12 pages) reporting complete research
• short papers (6 pages) presenting ongoing or preliminary research
• posters (4 pages);
• demos (4 pages);
• European and National projects (6 pages).

Papers should be original and not previously submitted to other Conferences or Journals. All submissions will be reviewed on the basis of relevance, originality, importance and clarity following a double-blind peer review process. Submitted papers have to follow the LNCS proceedings formatting style and guidelines. Authors of accepted papers will be asked to register to the Conference and present their work in the form of either oral presentation or poster presentation. The Conference welcomes Workshops and Tutorial on any issues concerning metadata, ontologies, semantic Web, knowledge management, software engineering and digital libraries.

Revised and extended versions of best papers will be published in selected international journals, including the International Journal of Metadata, Semantics and Ontologies (Inderscience), and Program: Electronic library and information systems (Emerald) (list incomplete).

Proceedings will be published by Springer in the CCIS book series.
The proceedings will be abstracted/indexed in: Scopus, EI-Compendex, DBLP, Google Scholar, Mathematical Reviews, SCImago. CCIS volumes are also submitted for the inclusion in ISI Proceedings.

Awards:

Best paper award. This award will be presented to the authors of the best full paper submitted and presented to the conference.

Best student paper award. The 7^th MTSR’13 conference sponsors a paper competition to recognize excellence in a conference paper contribution whose primary author is a student (normally at a PhD or MRes level). The student is required to present the paper at the MTSR2013 conference. Submissions are evaluated on their originality, scientific merits, structure, and clarity of composition.
